Moles in your garden in Milton Keynes: what works and what it costs

Short answer: Molehills in a Milton Keynes lawn mean a mole is tunnelling underneath. If you can live with it, flattening the molehills is enough, because moles themselves do no direct harm (RSPCA). If you want them gone, GOV.UK says mole control works best from October to April, and the usual method is trapping by a trained mole catcher. There are no approved mole repellents, and strychnine has been illegal since 2006. One MK-area firm publishes a price: £50 to set traps plus £50 per mole caught.

Is it a mole?

Signs as described by MK firm BH Pest Control mole page.

Do you have to do anything?

Not necessarily. The RSPCA says moles themselves do no direct harm, and their tunnels help mix air and water into the soil. If the molehills are the only problem, flattening them solves it. Regular mowing, children playing and other noise can help put moles off (RSPCA: Living with moles).

Skip the gadgets. The RSPCA says there's no scientific evidence for milk bottles, vibrating probes, toy windmills or "repellent" plants. GOV.UK says there are no commercially available repellents approved for use against moles (GOV.UK (Natural England): foxes, moles and mink).

When to act

GOV.UK (Natural England) says you can control moles most effectively from October to April, when they're digging new tunnels and before the breeding season (GOV.UK (Natural England): foxes, moles and mink). MK firm BH Pest Control puts breeding at February to June (BH Pest Control mole page). So if molehills are a real problem, autumn and winter is the time to book.

What the law says

What a mole catcher does

The usual job: find the active runs, set traps in them, check the traps regularly and take them away once the moles are cleared (PestBait mole control). BH Pest Control says it can suggest prevention afterwards, such as wire mesh laid underground (BH Pest Control mole page).

Ask before you book: is the price per visit or per mole? What if nothing is caught? How often will the traps be checked? Are return visits included?

What it costs in Milton Keynes

Most MK firms don't put a mole price online. Hunter Pest Services publishes £50 to set traps, plus £50 for each mole caught within a month (Hunter Pest Services prices). See all MK firms that handle moles.

Does the council deal with moles?

Moles aren't on its list. Milton Keynes City Council's pest page covers rats and mice on public land, communal areas of council property, problems coming from a neighbour, and food premises. For anything else it recommends a professional pest controller from the NPTA or BPCA lists, or a firm in the Buy with Confidence scheme.
